How our manuscript review works

What an acquisitions editor looks for in the first ten pages, and how to prepare your submission.

Every manuscript we receive is read by a member of our acquisitions team. We look for three things in the opening pages: a distinct voice, a clear sense of who the book is for, and a reason to keep turning pages.

Before submitting, make sure your opening chapter starts where the story starts. Cut the throat-clearing. Begin with a character who wants something.

Include a one-paragraph synopsis and a short note on who your readers are. It helps us match you with the right imprint and editor.
